WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) kicked off National Financial Literacy Month by launching its Retirement Saving and Income Handbook. This publication, the first in a planned series of educational resources, is a basic guide to annuity and non-annuity solutions for accumulating and preserving wealth and generating retirement income from investable assets.

“An ongoing challenge for workers and retirees is accumulating enough money for retirement to maintain a dignified lifestyle and ensure they do not outlive their savings,” said Wayne Chopus, IRI President and CEO. “Our Retirement Saving and Income Handbook provides financial professionals with an educational tool to help them better understand how annuities can play a unique role in an investor’s portfolio by protecting against investment losses and providing guaranteed income for life.”

The Handbook provides basic descriptions of annuity and non-annuity products commonly available to investors, directly or through financial professionals. For each product or solution, a synopsis of common features and a visual representation is provided of how each one functions. Financial professionals in the retirement industry will find the Handbook useful for understanding and contrasting annuity and non-annuity solutions, training those new to the industry, and satisfying the requirement under the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Regulation Best Interest to evaluate annuities alongside reasonably available alternatives when making product recommendations.

IRI plans to publish additional guides in the near future, which will delve deeper into the nuances of the various types of annuities and provide a complete suite of educational resources on annuity products.
